Lavender is either something you love or hate and one of those oils I find many people either squirm over or can’t get enough. I remember when I first started using doTERRA I had no plans to purchase Lavender, and then I smelt it…. needless to say it does NOT smell like your nannies potpourri or the old lady soaps from your primary school mothers day stalls šŸ˜‰
So – what is Lavender essential oil and how is extracted?

Lavender is a short shrub that grows to be roughly 2 feet tall and is native to the Mediterranean. The distinct, fresh scent of Lavender comes from the plantā€™s flowers, which is where the essential oil is extracted from.
Lavender falls under the chemical compound group known asĀ esters, which are typically characterized for their calming properties. The main chemical components of Lavender oil are Linalool and linalyl acetate.
Essential oils that are high inĀ Linalool, including Lavender, are known for their ability to reduce sad and anxious feelings.* When taken internally, Lavender essential oil can help reduce anxious feelings and promote restful sleep.* As an essential oil with chemical components known for its calming properties, Lavender can also be used to help ease feelings of tension.*

Did you know? ItĀ takes 35 pounds of Lavender flowers to produce just one 15mL bottle of Lavender essential oil!!

With a distinct aroma and countless applications, Lavender has been used for centuries. Anciently, the Romans and Egyptians would use Lavender as perfume and for bathing and cooking. Since that time, many have discovered the myriad benefits that Lavender holds. The versatile properties of Lavender essential oil make it a doTERRA favorite, and a must-have oil to keep on hand at all times.

My fav ways to use LavenderĀ

One wiff of Lavender and you will be feeling cool as cucumber… I quite often like to just hold the bottle under my nose and take a few deep breaths. A far more effective option is to pop 1 drop into the palm of your hand – rub together – then cup under your nose.

Add a couple of drops of Lavender oil to your bath along with either some epsom salts or a dash of milk.

Diffuse 4-6 drops to help ease anxious feelings* or prior to bed. I love to add in either Frankincense, Cedarwood or some doTERRA Balance.

Add 1 drop to a cup of hot water for a delicious soothing Lavender tea before bed (also delicious with 1 drop Wild Orange).

I tell you what – the nights I *forget* to pop a drop on my pillow I pay for it the next day #amsonotrested – for me, Lavender just really helps to put me into a deep sleep, ease the mind and brings about rest and relaxation.

Add 1 drop to your pillow (or even to your shift/pj top) – some nights I go a bit cray cray and add 1 to each side of my pillow (the husbo hates this haha)

After a shower mix a few drops of Lavender oil with some FCO (fractionated coconut oil) and massage all over your body. This will also help to soothe sore muscles! This one is really great to do with little ones after a bath – a beautiful relaxing lavender body massage.

Mix 10-15 drops of Lavender with some distilled water in a 30ml glass spray bottle and spritz over your bed and pillow (this is great for little ones or if you are without a diffuser – AND great to spritz over any cray cray colleagues or tense teenagers).

Apply to the soles of the feet.

I make pretty much all my own skin care since using doTERRA oils. Its cheap as chips, I know exactly whats in it and I have fun in the process.

Add 1 drop to the palm of your hand with your cleanser, toner and moisturiser/serum.

Add 10 drops to either some jojoba or reship oil for your very own face oil/serum. Apply morning and night. I also like to add 10 drops of Frankincense.

Add 1-2 drops to some carrier oil and apply after shaving to your soothe skin.

Due to Lavender’s soothing properties it is great for any bumps, scrapes or bites. I simply apply directly to the affected area (for example – right now I have huge ass bite on my knee) toĀ soothe skin irritations, relieve redness and ease swelling.

Add 5 drops of Lavender (with 5 drops Tea Tree and 5 drops Frankincense) to a 10ml roller and fill with FCO for your own Owies Roller to have on hand for when your cutting the onions, bump your knee or get bitten.

Probably goes hand in hand with relaxation and sleep but none the less deserves it own category!

Inhale. Inhale. Inhale.

Dab some Lavender on your temples and the back of your neck (I love to add some Peppermint to help relieve headaches/tension).

Keep inhaling….

Essential Oils have E M O T I O N A LĀ benefits too – yep you heard right…

According to the book ‘Emotions and Essential Oils’ Lavender is the Oil of Communication.

Lavender helps you use your voice. If you are holding yourself back or are hesitant to ā€œput yourself out thereā€ lavender will soothe your worries and support you to release tension and fear of ridicule or rejection.Ā Lavender holds up a mirror and invites you to be honest with your innermost thoughts and desires. This gives you the courage to open up and share these hopes and dreams with your tribe and beyond.

The best ways to use oils for emotional purposes is to diffuse (or inhale) and to massage with some carrier oil over your body as an aromatic dressing. Often I find I don’t have the time for full body massages but after a shower I will massage over my arms, chest, throat, neck and over my heart.

ā€¢ 1 cup Epsom Salts
ā€¢ 1/2 cup Himalayan Salt
ā€¢ 10 drops ofĀ dōTERRAĀ Lavender essential oil (I also like to mix it up sometimes with Clary Sage essential oil which is great for hormone balance and has similar calming/soothing properties to Lavender).
Combine the salts in a glass jar then add your essential oil.Ā Mix through until combined (I generally use a large wooden kebab stick!). *Store away from direct sunlight. Add to the bath as often or as frequently as you like. ENJOY!
